Essential Oils for Horse Tendons

Let’s talk about our large 4-legged

friends. I have a horse that I have had since his birth and he is now 19 years old. He was born and raised at my grandparents’ house. This makes him extra special because they are both gone now. He was born on the 4^th of July and my Grandma Hamm named him Target. To this day I don’t know where she came up the name. I love my horse just the same.

Recently Target came in the barn and was limping on his back leg. I caught him and cleaned out his foot, didn’t find anything and turned him back out. It was on the mend and then he was scared by some loud noises outside and hurt it again. I went to feed the next morning and he could barely put pressure on it. The worst thought came to mind first, he broke his leg and I am going to have to put him down. I begin to cry because he is the last living thing my grandparents gave me. I called my husband and he said give him a day and if he is not better, we will take him to the vet. I then called my sister and she said the same thing.

I had to pull myself together and fix him. I went straight to my Animal Desk Reference book and looked up tendon conditions. There were several oils that could be used to help. I choose Lemongrass, Copaiba, Marjoram, Black Spruce and Helichrysum. I put a few drops of each oil in the almost empty Helichrysum bottle, then added some Fractionated Coconut Oil to it. I also decided I should soak his foot/leg in Epson Salt, but how was I going to soak his leg? I used to big sponges soaked in Epsom Salt and I wrapped them to his leg. When it came off, I massaged about 8 drops of my oil mixture into his leg. I repeated the oil part a few times a day for a few days. I also got a heat pack and wrapped it on his leg too.

By the next morning his was able to stand on his back foot and walk on it. I was so excited; I wasn’t going to have to put him down. I kept up with my oil massage for a few days and now he is doing great!!!
